How the unit price is calculated

The unit price is simply the package price divided by the quantity in the package. Comparing two options is only fair when both quantities use the same units — ounces against ounces, or items against items. The lower unit price is the better value for the same product.

Unit price = Package price ÷ Quantity
Worked example

$6 for 12 units

A package priced at $6.00 containing 12 units works out to $0.50 per unit ($6.00 ÷ 12). A competing package is a better deal only if its unit price comes out below $0.50.

How do I compare two package sizes?

Calculate the unit price for each package using the same unit of measure, then compare. The package with the lower price per unit is the better value for that product.

What counts as a unit?

A unit is whatever you divide by — ounces, grams, sheets, count, or servings. Just be consistent so both packages are measured the same way.
