How the tip and split are calculated
The tip is the bill multiplied by the tip rate expressed as a decimal. Adding the tip to the bill gives the grand total. Dividing that total by the number of people gives each person’s equal share. The tip is calculated on the pre-tax bill amount you enter.
Tip = Bill × (Tip % ÷ 100)Total = Bill + TipPer person = Total ÷ People$85 bill, 20% tip, split 4 ways
A $85.00 bill with a 20% tip produces a tip of $17.00 (85 × 0.20) and a total of $102.00. Split between 4 people, each person owes $25.50 ($102.00 ÷ 4).

Tip FAQ
Should I tip on the pre-tax or post-tax amount?
Customs vary. This calculator tips on the amount you enter, so enter the pre-tax subtotal to tip on that, or the post-tax total to tip on that. Either way the math is the same.
How is the per-person amount worked out?
The grand total (bill plus tip) is divided evenly by the number of people sharing the bill. It does not account for people ordering different amounts.
