Formula & methodology

How trade profit is calculated

Profit is what you receive when you sell, minus what you paid to buy. Total cost is the buy price times the quantity, plus any buy fee. Total proceeds is the sell price times the quantity, minus any sell fee. The percentage return expresses that profit relative to your total cost. The same arithmetic applies to any asset priced per unit — a coin, a token, or a share.

Total cost = (Buy price × Quantity) + Buy fee
Total proceeds = (Sell price × Quantity) − Sell fee
Profit = Total proceeds − Total cost
Return % = (Profit / Total cost) × 100

Worked example

0.5 units bought at $20,000, sold at $30,000

Suppose you bought 0.5 units at $20,000 each and later sold them at $30,000 each, paying a $50 buy fee and a $60 sell fee. Total cost is (20,000 × 0.5) + 50 = $10,050. Total proceeds is (30,000 × 0.5) − 60 = $14,940. Profit is 14,940 − 10,050 = +$4,890.00, a return of 48.6567% on your total cost.

Assumptions

What this calculator assumes

  • A single buy and a single sell of the same quantity — it does not model partial sells or averaging across multiple lots.
  • Fees are flat, one-time dollar amounts on each side, not a percentage of the trade.
  • No taxes, such as capital gains tax, are modeled in the result.
  • No live price data is used — every figure comes from the values you enter.
  • Money values are rounded to the nearest cent for display.
Common questions

Crypto profit FAQ

Does this only work for cryptocurrency?

No. Although it is framed around a crypto trade, the math is identical for stocks, ETFs, or any asset priced per unit. Enter a share price and a number of shares and the profit, proceeds, and return are calculated the same way.

Are taxes included in the profit?

No. The profit shown is before any tax. Selling an asset for more than you paid can trigger capital gains tax, which depends on your jurisdiction and how long you held the asset. This tool does not estimate that.
