What it is
Ease of Movement, developed by Richard Arms, measures how much effort, in the form of volume, it takes to move price — rewarding big price moves that happen on light volume and penalising small moves that require heavy volume. The intuition is that a healthy, efficient advance should be able to travel far without needing enormous volume to push it, whereas a labored market grinds only a little despite heavy trading. The indicator plots a single line around a zero baseline: strongly positive when price is rising easily, strongly negative when it is falling easily, and near zero when it is taking a lot of volume to move price at all. For a beginner, Ease of Movement answers the question, is this move gliding or struggling? A move that glides on modest volume is more sustainable than one that has to be forced. It blends price change and volume into one efficiency read.
How it is calculated
The calculation has two parts. First, the distance moved is the change in the bar's midpoint: the average of the current high and low, minus the average of the previous high and low. Second, the box ratio measures the volume required per unit of range: the bar's volume, usually divided by a scaling constant to keep the numbers manageable, divided by the bar's high-minus-low range. The raw one-period Ease of Movement is the distance moved divided by the box ratio, so it grows when the midpoint shifts a lot on a low box ratio — that is, a big move on modest volume relative to range. This raw value is jumpy, so it is almost always smoothed with a moving average, conventionally 14 periods, and that smoothed line is what is plotted around zero. High positive readings therefore mean price advanced easily, and deeply negative readings mean it fell easily.
Reading it, step by step
A high positive Ease of Movement means price is rising with little volume resistance — an efficient, low-effort advance that tends to be sustainable. A deeply negative reading means price is falling just as easily, an efficient decline. Readings hovering near zero carry a different message: it is taking heavy volume to move price at all, which describes a labored, congested market that may be stalling. Crossings of the zero line are the basic trend cue, marking the shift from price moving down easily to moving up easily or vice versa. The most prized moves are those that occur on high ease of movement, since low-effort trends have room to continue. Watch also for divergence, where price rises to new highs but Ease of Movement fades, warning that the advance is now requiring more volume to make less progress — a sign of a tiring trend.
Best timeframes and settings
The standard smoothing is a 14-period average, and Ease of Movement is typically applied to daily charts where volume data is clean and meaningful, though it can be used intraday on liquid instruments. Shortening the smoothing period makes the line more responsive but noisier, reacting to every erratic bar, while lengthening it produces a steadier read that filters noise at the cost of later signals. Because the raw calculation is unstable, the smoothing is essential rather than optional, and going too short reintroduces the very spikiness the average is meant to tame. The scaling constant in the box ratio only affects the absolute magnitude of the readings, not their shape, so it is chosen for readability. As a volume-based tool it depends entirely on trustworthy volume data, which makes it best suited to instruments and timeframes where reported volume is reliable.
When and where to use it
Ease of Movement is a flexible tool usable in any regime, but it is most informative for judging the quality and sustainability of a trend rather than for precise entries. It works best on instruments with reliable volume, primarily exchange-traded equities and futures, and is weaker in markets such as spot FX where volume is fragmented or synthetic. Use it to confirm that a breakout or trend is progressing efficiently, and to spot when a move is beginning to labor. Avoid trusting it on bars with tiny ranges or near-zero volume, where the box ratio becomes unstable and the indicator can spike meaninglessly. It is at its best as a confirmation and divergence tool layered onto a directional method, telling you whether the move you are already watching is gliding or grinding, rather than as a standalone signal generator.
Strategies that use it
The first strategy is zero-line trend trading: buy when Ease of Movement crosses up through zero, signalling price has begun rising easily, and exit or reverse when it crosses back below, ideally filtering the signals with a trend tool. The second is an efficiency filter for breakouts: when price breaks a level, take the breakout only if it occurs on high ease of movement, since a break that glides higher on low volume resistance is more likely to hold than one that struggles. The third is a divergence exit: while long in an uptrend, watch for price to make new highs as Ease of Movement fades toward zero, and use that divergence as a cue to tighten stops or take profit, reading it as the trend beginning to labor. In each case, pairing the tool with price structure gives the efficiency read a directional context and keeps you from trading its noisier crosses in isolation.
Combining it with other indicators
As a hybrid of price and volume, Ease of Movement complements both trend tools and other volume measures. A moving average or trend filter supplies the direction that turns its efficiency read into an actionable bias, so you fade fewer of its zero crosses in ranges. On-Balance Volume or a volume oscillator can corroborate whether accumulation or distribution underlies the ease of movement, adding conviction to a breakout. The Force Index is a natural cousin, since it also blends price change and volume, and agreement between the two strengthens the read. Support and resistance levels give the breakout-efficiency strategy logical triggers and targets. The recurring theme is that Ease of Movement judges how effortlessly price is moving, and partner tools supply the direction, the level, and the confirmation of the money flow behind that movement.
Where it fails
The box ratio, which divides volume by range, becomes unstable on bars with very small ranges or near-zero volume, causing the indicator to spike and mislead. Without smoothing the raw line is far too noisy to trade, and even smoothed it is only as reliable as the underlying volume data, so it degrades badly on instruments with poor or fragmented volume. Beginners misuse it by trading every zero-line cross mechanically, ignoring that in a range those crosses whipsaw, or by trusting spikes that are really box-ratio artefacts from thin bars. The fixes are to always smooth the indicator, to apply it only where volume is trustworthy, to filter its signals with a trend tool, and to be skeptical of extreme readings that coincide with unusually narrow-range or low-volume bars. Treat it as a confirmation of a move's quality rather than a standalone trigger, and its weaknesses become manageable.
A worked example
Consider a stock whose previous bar had a high of 51 and a low of 49, giving a midpoint of 50, and whose current bar has a high of 53 and a low of 49, giving a midpoint of 51. The distance moved is 51 minus 50, or plus one. The current bar's volume is 10 million, and using a scaling constant of 100 million, the box ratio is 10 million divided by 100 million, which is 0.1, then divided by the range of 53 minus 49, or 4, giving 0.025. The raw one-period Ease of Movement is the distance moved of one divided by the box ratio of 0.025, which equals 40 — a large positive value, telling you price advanced with very little volume resistance. Averaged over 14 periods this contributes to a strongly positive, rising Ease of Movement line, confirming an efficient uptrend. A week later, price makes a marginally higher high but the Ease of Movement line sags toward zero, warning that the advance is now grinding rather than gliding, and you tighten your stop accordingly.
