How it is calculated

If today's volume is equal to or higher than yesterday's, NVI simply holds its previous value unchanged, contributing nothing on that session. Because the line only moves on lower-volume days, it accumulates the price behavior of quiet sessions while completely ignoring what happens on active ones. Over time this produces a line that rises when prices tend to advance on calm days and falls when they tend to decline on calm days, capturing the cumulative drift of the market during periods of low participation.

It is not designed for intraday use, where the smart-money-on-quiet-days premise does not apply and the line would be dominated by noise. The 255-day average is the conventional benchmark, though some traders experiment with other long lookbacks; shortening it makes the regime signal more responsive but less reliable, while the default is tuned to identify multi-month bull and bear phases. Because it is inherently slow and updates only on lower-volume sessions, there is little value in trying to speed it up for short-term trading — doing so fights the indicator's entire design. It performs best on instruments and indices with long, clean daily volume histories, since the cumulative calculation depends on a consistent volume series.
