What it is
Net Volume measures the balance of buying versus selling pressure within a single bar by subtracting the volume that traded on downticks from the volume that traded on upticks, producing one signed number per period. Plotted as a histogram of bars above and below a zero line, it shows at a glance whether each period saw more aggressive buying or more aggressive selling and how strong that imbalance was. Unlike cumulative volume tools such as On-Balance Volume that add their readings into a running total, Net Volume is not summed over time — each bar stands on its own as a snapshot of that period's net pressure. For a beginner, Net Volume answers a simple question about any given bar: did buyers or sellers dominate the actual transactions, and by how much? It is a per-bar read on the character of a move, separating the price action you see from the order flow that produced it.
How it is calculated
The purest version of Net Volume uses tick-level data, classifying each trade as an uptick if it occurred at a higher price than the previous trade or a downtick if lower, then summing the volume of all upticks and subtracting the summed volume of all downticks within the bar. The result is a single signed figure: positive when uptick volume exceeds downtick volume, negative when the reverse. When tick data is unavailable, platforms approximate the split using the direction of the bar's close relative to the prior close or relative to the bar's open, assigning the whole bar's volume to buying or selling accordingly — a coarser method that inherits the same misclassification problem as OBV. Crucially, the figure is computed independently for each bar and is not carried forward, so unlike a cumulative line it resets its reference to zero every period and reflects only that period's net activity.
Reading it, step by step
Read Net Volume by the sign and height of each bar. Bars above the zero line indicate net buying for that period and bars below indicate net selling, while the height of the bar shows the conviction behind the imbalance — a tall positive bar means buyers overwhelmingly dominated, a tall negative bar means sellers did. A run of tall positive bars confirms sustained demand and supports the validity of an up-move, whereas a run of negative bars warns of persistent selling. The most valuable reads come when Net Volume contradicts price: a large negative Net Volume bar printed at a new price high can flag a stealthy hand-off from buyers to sellers even as price rises, and a green candle accompanied by negative Net Volume suggests the up-bar was weaker beneath the surface than it appears. Because each bar is a standalone snapshot, you read Net Volume in the context of the surrounding bars and the price action rather than off any single reading.
Best timeframes and settings
Net Volume is most informative on timeframes and instruments where accurate uptick and downtick data is available, which favors centralized, high-volume markets like listed stocks and futures on intraday and daily charts. Intraday traders use it to read the order-flow character of each bar in real time, while swing traders use daily Net Volume to judge whether a breakout or reversal is backed by genuine pressure. There are few parameters to tune since it is a per-bar calculation, but the quality of the reading depends entirely on the data source — true tick-based classification is far more reliable than the close-direction approximation. On lower timeframes the per-bar noise is greater, so readings should be weighed across several bars rather than one. Because it is not cumulative, there is no lookback period to lengthen or shorten; the main choice is simply the chart timeframe, which sets how granular each net-pressure snapshot is.
When and where to use it
Net Volume is an any-regime tool used to confirm the character of a move and to detect divergences between price and the order flow driving it. It is most useful at moments of decision — breakouts, tests of support and resistance, and new price extremes — where knowing whether real buying or selling backs the move separates trustworthy signals from traps. It works best on liquid instruments with reliable tick data and is weaker where volume is fragmented across venues or must be approximated. Use it to validate that a breakout is backed by strongly positive Net Volume, or to raise a warning when a rally prints on flat or negative readings. Avoid leaning on it heavily where the uptick-downtick data is only approximated from close direction, since there the tool inherits OBV's bluntness, and always read it as one input among several rather than a standalone signal.
Strategies that use it
The breakout-confirmation strategy uses Net Volume as a filter on price breakouts: you take a breakout above resistance more seriously when the breakout bar and its followers print strongly positive Net Volume, and you distrust or skip a breakout that occurs on flat or negative readings, since the move lacks the order flow to sustain it. The divergence strategy watches for Net Volume that contradicts the candle — for example a green up-bar accompanied by negative Net Volume near a high, which warns that sellers are quietly absorbing the advance and a reversal may be near, prompting you to tighten stops or fade the move. A third strategy uses Net Volume at support and resistance tests, buying a support test that shows a shift to positive Net Volume and rejecting one that shows continued selling. In each case Net Volume confirms or questions the price signal rather than generating trades on its own.
Combining it with other indicators
Net Volume complements cumulative volume tools like On-Balance Volume and the Up/Down Volume Ratio, where the cumulative line shows the longer-term accumulation trend and Net Volume shows the per-bar pressure that builds it, so reading them together links the moment to the trend. It pairs with price-based support and resistance and with breakout levels, where its per-bar read confirms whether a level test has real force behind it. Candlestick patterns gain confirmation from Net Volume, since a reversal candle backed by a decisive Net Volume shift is far more convincing than one on neutral flow. Momentum oscillators can corroborate a Net Volume divergence at an extreme. Because Net Volume is granular and noisy on its own, it is most powerful as a confirmation layer beneath structural and trend tools rather than as the centerpiece of a system.
Where it fails
The chief vulnerability of Net Volume is data quality: accurate readings require genuine tick-level uptick and downtick information, and when the buying-selling split is approximated from close direction alone, the indicator inherits the same misclassification problem as OBV, where a marginal close flips the entire bar's classification. Because it is a per-bar snapshot rather than a cumulative measure, a single reading is easily overinterpreted, and it must be read in the context of surrounding bars rather than in isolation. On fragmented markets like some spot forex, where there is no consolidated volume, the tool is unreliable or unavailable. Its granularity makes it noisy on low timeframes, generating conflicting signals bar to bar. And like all volume tools it confirms rather than predicts, so treating a single striking Net Volume bar as a standalone trade trigger, without price and level context, is the classic mistake.
A worked example
Suppose a stock is grinding up toward a resistance level at 50 and finally breaks above it on a wide green candle. You check Net Volume for the breakout bar and see a tall positive reading — uptick volume dwarfed downtick volume — confirming that aggressive buyers, not just a thin drift, drove the break, so you enter long with confidence just above 50. Over the next several bars price edges higher to 52, but you notice the Net Volume bars, though price is still rising, have turned shorter and then dipped below zero, printing negative even as one candle closes green. This divergence tells you sellers are quietly absorbing the advance at the highs, a possible stealthy hand-off from buyers to sellers, so you tighten your stop just under 51. Price soon stalls and rolls over, your stop takes you out near 51 for a modest gain, and the subsequent decline back through 50 confirms that the negative Net Volume beneath the rising price had correctly warned the buying pressure was drying up.
