The formula

Bollinger Band width (standard deviation) is compared with Keltner Channel width (ATR). When the bands slip inside the channels, range has tightened to an extreme — the squeeze. A linear-regression histogram of price around its midline shows whether the coiled energy is turning up or down.

What the Squeeze Momentum Indicator is

The Squeeze Momentum Indicator, created by the trader known as LazyBear, is a popular mashup of John Carter's TTM Squeeze and a momentum histogram, designed to spot when a market has coiled up and then read which way the stored energy releases. Its first job is to detect a squeeze — a period when volatility has compressed so tightly that a big move is likely brewing. Its second job is to show, through a momentum histogram, whether that building energy is leaning bullish or bearish so you can anticipate the breakout direction. The tool combines a volatility-compression signal with a directional momentum read in a single pane. For a beginner, imagine a spring being wound tighter and tighter: the squeeze tells you the spring is loaded, and the momentum histogram hints which way it will snap when released.

How the indicator is calculated

The squeeze detection compares two volatility envelopes — Bollinger Bands, whose width comes from standard deviation, and Keltner Channels, whose width comes from the Average True Range. When the Bollinger Bands contract so far that they sit entirely inside the Keltner Channels, volatility has compressed to an extreme and the squeeze is on; when the bands expand back outside the channels, the squeeze fires off. Both typically use a 20-period basis, with Bollinger Bands at 2 standard deviations and Keltner Channels at 1.5 ATR. The momentum histogram is a linear-regression value of price relative to a midline, an average of the recent Donchian midpoint and the 20-period moving average, computed over 20 bars, and its color and direction show whether momentum is rising or falling. Dots on the zero line mark the squeeze state, and the histogram bars encode the momentum.

Reading the indicator, step by step

Read the tool in two parts. The dots on the zero line report the volatility state: while the bands sit inside the channels the squeeze is on, often shown as red or black dots, and the moment they expand back out the squeeze releases, shown as green or gray dots. When the squeeze fires off, the histogram's direction and color point to the likely breakout side — rising bars, especially brightening ones above zero, argue for an upside push, while falling bars below zero argue for a drop. The histogram's slope matters more than its absolute height: bars building in one direction show momentum accelerating that way. A series of squeeze-on dots is the coil forming; the first off-dot is the release. Crucially, the squeeze itself tells you a move is coming, not its direction — the histogram supplies the directional lean.

Squeeze Momentum works across timeframes, from intraday charts for day traders to daily and weekly charts for swing and position traders, because volatility compression is a fractal phenomenon. The standard settings — a 20-period basis, Bollinger Bands at 2 standard deviations, and Keltner Channels at 1.5 ATR — are the common defaults, though some traders tighten the Keltner multiplier to 1.0 for a stricter squeeze or loosen it to 2.0 for more frequent signals. A tighter Keltner setting produces fewer but higher-conviction squeezes; a looser one flags more coils but with more false releases. The momentum length of 20 can be shortened for a faster histogram at the cost of noise. Match the timeframe to your horizon, and remember that squeezes on higher timeframes precede larger moves.

When and where to use it

The tool is at its best in markets that alternate between quiet consolidation and explosive expansion — it is built precisely to trade that cycle, catching the coil and riding the release. It works across all liquid asset classes: stocks, futures, forex, and crypto. Its weakness is a strong, persistent trend, during which the indicator can stay squeeze-off for a long time and offer few fresh setups, or a market so choppy that releases fail repeatedly. Avoid acting on the squeeze before it actually fires, and be cautious in a market that is already trending hard with no compression. The ideal regime is a range or base that is visibly tightening, promising a breakout the tool can position you for.

Strategies that use Squeeze Momentum

The canonical strategy waits for a series of squeeze-on dots, the coil, and then enters on the first bar the squeeze fires off, in the direction the momentum histogram is pointing, placing the stop on the opposite side of the range that formed during the squeeze. A momentum-continuation variant holds the trade as long as the histogram keeps building in the trade's direction, exiting when the bars stall or flip color, which trails the move by its momentum. A false-break guard adds a price-confirmation filter — requiring price to break the consolidation's high or low along with the squeeze release — to avoid being faked out by the histogram alone. In each case, the discipline is to wait for the actual release rather than anticipating direction while the squeeze is still on.

Combining Squeeze Momentum with other indicators

Squeeze Momentum pairs naturally with support and resistance or the boundaries of the consolidation itself, which give the breakout a level to confirm against and a logical stop. A higher-timeframe trend tool — a moving average or ADX — biases which side of the squeeze to favor, so you take releases in the direction of the larger trend. Volume confirmation strengthens a breakout, since a genuine release should attract participation. It works well with the underlying components too, such as watching the actual Bollinger Bands widen as the squeeze fires. Because it already blends volatility and momentum, the most valuable additions are price structure and a trend filter rather than another momentum oscillator that would merely echo the histogram.

Where Squeeze Momentum fails

The defining trap is that a squeeze tells you a move is coming but not which way, so acting on the compression before the release — or trusting the histogram's lean too early — invites a fake-out in the wrong direction when price breaks the opposite way. In strong trends the indicator can stay squeeze-off for long stretches, offering few setups and tempting traders to force trades that are not there. Releases can also fail, snapping one way and then reversing, especially in choppy markets. The histogram can flip color right at the release, whipsawing anticipatory entries. The safeguards are to wait for the actual fire, to confirm with a price break of the range, to trade releases in the direction of the higher-timeframe trend, and to keep the stop on the far side of the coil so a false break is cheap.

A worked example

Imagine a stock consolidating in a tight two-dollar range for two weeks, and the Squeeze Momentum indicator prints a run of red squeeze-on dots as the Bollinger Bands slip inside the Keltner Channels. During the coil the momentum histogram is small but its bars begin ticking higher and brightening above the zero line, hinting the pressure leans bullish. On the tenth day the dots turn green — the squeeze fires off — and on that same bar price breaks above the top of the range at 52.00 while the histogram surges upward. A trader enters long at 52.10 on the release, placing a stop at 49.80 below the opposite side of the consolidation range, and holds while the green histogram keeps building. Over the next two weeks price runs to 58 as momentum expands, and the trader exits when the histogram stalls and the bars begin to shrink. The setup worked because the entry waited for the actual release and the price break, not the squeeze alone.
