The formula

Divide today's volume by the volume N bars back, subtract one and express it as a percent. Positive means participation has grown since then, a spike means it has ballooned, and negative means it has dried up. The direction of price is not part of the calculation.

What it is

Volume Rate of Change (VROC) applies the classic Rate of Change momentum calculation to volume instead of price, measuring how fast trading participation is expanding or contracting. Rather than telling you whether volume is high or low in absolute terms, it tells you the percentage by which volume has surged or shrunk compared to a set number of bars ago. It oscillates around a zero line, spiking sharply when volume balloons and dropping negative when activity dries up. Its purpose is to quantify bursts and lulls in participation, which often mark the fuel behind breakouts and the exhaustion of trends. For a beginner, it is a speedometer for volume: it does not measure how much is trading, but how quickly the amount of trading is changing.

How it is calculated

VROC takes today's volume, divides it by the volume a chosen number of bars ago, subtracts one, and multiplies by 100 to express the change as a percentage. A common lookback is 12, 14, or 25 bars. If today's volume equals the volume N bars ago, the result is zero; if today's volume is double that of N bars ago, the result is plus 100 percent; if it is half, the result is minus 50 percent. Because it references a single bar N periods in the past rather than an average, the reading is sensitive to whatever volume happened to occur on that specific reference bar. The only parameter is the lookback length, which sets how far back the comparison reaches and therefore how the surges and lulls are framed.

A sharp positive spike is the headline signal: it marks a sudden surge of participation, the kind of fuel that powers a genuine breakout or that appears at the climactic peak of a trend.
