Look at a DOM ladder and one thing jumps out: the two sides are rarely equal. When resting buy size dwarfs resting sell size, or vice versa, the book is imbalanced — and traders have long tried to read that lopsidedness as a clue to where price will go next. It is a genuine signal, but a treacherous one, because the very orders you are reading can vanish the instant you rely on them.
What order-book imbalance is
Order-book imbalance is a simple idea: at a given moment, the total resting size on the bid side and the ask side are unequal. If there are far more contracts bid below the market than offered above it, the book is bid-heavy; the reverse is ask-heavy, like the large ask wall in the diagram. The imbalance can be measured crudely by eye — one side of the ladder is visibly thicker — or precisely as a ratio of bid depth to ask depth over some number of levels. It is a snapshot of stated supply and demand: how much resting size is currently waiting on each side. The question every DOM trader asks is whether that snapshot predicts the next move.
Reading it on the ladder
On the ladder you read imbalance by scanning the two columns of size and comparing them, both at the inside market and several levels deep. A stack of large bids immediately beneath the current price suggests buyers are lined up to defend it; a wall of offers just above, as shown, suggests sellers are capping it. Some traders weight the levels closest to the touch most heavily, since far-away orders are least committed and most likely to be repositioned. The raw picture is easy to see; the discipline is in comparing like for like — depth over the same number of levels on each side — rather than being mesmerised by a single huge number.
Static ratio versus dynamic change
A static snapshot of imbalance is far less useful than watching how it changes. A large resting wall that holds firm as price approaches is behaving differently from one that quietly shrinks tick by tick as orders are pulled, even though a single screenshot shows the same size. The informative moments are dynamic: bids stacking up faster than they are hit (buyers growing more committed), or an offer wall melting as its orders are cancelled ahead of price (sellers losing conviction). Reading imbalance well means watching the book breathe in real time, not judging a frozen frame. The rate and direction of change usually carry more signal than the absolute ratio.
What imbalance can and cannot signal
There is real, documented short-term predictive content in order-book imbalance: when resting buyers heavily outnumber sellers at the touch, the next tick is modestly more likely to be up, and quantitative market-makers trade on exactly this. But the effect is small, short-horizon, and easily swamped by aggression from the other side. Imbalance tells you about resting, passive intent — orders willing to wait — not about the aggressive market orders that actually move price. A bid-heavy book can be blown straight through by determined market selling, and frequently is. Treat imbalance as one probabilistic input about the near-term tick, never as a directional guarantee.
Why the biggest walls so often fail
Newcomers assume a giant bid wall is strong support and a giant offer wall is strong resistance, but the opposite frequently plays out, for two reasons. First, large visible orders are the easiest to fake: a spoofer posts size with no intention of trading, hoping to scare others, then pulls it as price nears. Second, a genuine large wall is a giant target — it advertises exactly where a pool of liquidity sits, and aggressive traders will drive price into it precisely because it offers enough resting orders to fill their size against. A wall that gets absorbed rather than defended flips from support to a springboard for continuation. The lesson is that visible size is as often a magnet or a trap as it is a barrier.
Using imbalance in practice
Because imbalance is noisy and gameable, it works only as a supporting read, never a standalone trigger. Combine it with context: an imbalance that agrees with the higher-timeframe trend and sits at a meaningful level is worth more than one floating in no-man's-land. Confirm intent with the tape — a bid wall that is actually holding will show offers being absorbed at the bid without price falling, which real executions reveal and resting size alone cannot. Watch for walls that reload after being hit (genuine, and possibly an iceberg) versus walls that pull as price approaches (fake). Used this way — as confirmation, weighted by change and cross-checked against the tape — imbalance sharpens a read that other tools began.
