Room, openings, and sheet size
The long wall, measured stud face to stud face. Closets and alcoves are separate rooms as far as this is concerned.
The short wall, measured the same way.
Eight feet is the usual stud height. Two courses of 4 ft board cover it exactly, which is why the standard sheet is 4 ft wide.
A ceiling is often a third of the board in a small room, and it is the part that gets forgotten.

- Sheet counts are rounded up and carry no extra waste allowance. Offcuts are usually reusable, so on a plain rectangular room the rounding is close — on a room with soffits, returns, or a stairwell, buy a spare sheet or two.
- One gallon of all-purpose compound per 100 sq ft covers a three-coat finish, and 400 ft of paper tape per 1,000 sq ft goes with it. Both are trade rules of thumb worth about ±30%, depending on how heavily the finisher works.
- Board thickness is not an input because it changes what is code-legal and what a sheet weighs, not how many sheets cover a wall. Check locally before you buy ½″ for a ceiling.
From a room to a stack of board and a bucket of mud
The area is straightforward: the perimeter of the room times the ceiling height gives the walls, the floor area gives the ceiling if you are boarding it, and the openings come off. Everything else on the list is a rate applied to that finished surface.

Sheets are rounded up, and that rounding is the only allowance made — no waste percentage is added on top. Drywall waste is not spillage, it is offcuts, and a large offcut is a usable piece: the 2 foot end cut off a 14 foot wall goes into the next course. On a plain rectangular room the ceiling is genuinely close. On a room with soffits, a stairwell, or returns into deep window reveals, buy a spare sheet or two and expect to use them.
Compound and tape are proportional to finished area rather than to sheet count, because what you are coating is joints, and joints scale with surface. One gallon per 100 square feet covers a three-coat finish; 400 linear feet of paper tape goes with every 1,000 square feet. Both are trade rules of thumb, both move about ±30% with technique, and both are reported anyway because a rough number beats the zero most estimates give them.
A 12 × 14 bedroom with an 8 foot ceiling
The perimeter is 2 × (12 + 14) = 52 feet. At 8 feet high that is 416 square feet of wall. The ceiling adds 12 × 14 = 168 square feet, for 584 gross. One door at 21 and two windows at 15 take off 51, leaving 533 square feet to board.
At 48 square feet a sheet, 533 ÷ 48 = 11.1, so 12 sheets of 4 × 12. The same room takes 14 sheets of 4 × 10 or 17 of 4 × 8 — five more pieces to lift, cut, and hang for exactly the same wall.
Then the part that gets left in the aisle: 5.3 gallons of all-purpose compound (one 4.5 gallon bucket plus a gallon box, or two buckets if you would rather not run out), 214 feet of paper tape, and 576 screws, which is about 1.8 pounds. Screws are sold by the pound; buy the 5 pound box and keep the remainder.
Hang it sideways, and buy the longest sheet you can carry
Sheet size and orientation do not change the square footage by one inch. What they change is the number of joints, and joints are where the work is. Hanging board is an afternoon; finishing it is three days.
Take the 12 × 14 room above. Hang 4 × 12 sheets horizontally and two courses cover the 8 foot wall exactly: one continuous tapered seam runs around the room at the 4 foot line — 52 linear feet — plus a butt joint on each of the two long walls where a 12 foot sheet meets its 2 foot filler. That is roughly 68 linear feet of joint. Hang 4 × 8 sheets vertically instead and you get a floor-to-ceiling seam every 4 feet: about a dozen of them, eight feet tall, or roughly 96 linear feet. Corners are taped either way.
The horizontal seam is also in a better place. At 4 feet off the floor it is at chest height for a standing finisher — reachable, sightable down its length for flatness, and lit from the side by a work light so imperfections show while they can still be fixed. A vertical seam has to be coated from ankle to overhead in one pass, on a wall, standing at an angle to your own work.
And then there is the taper. Every long edge of a sheet is recessed — a shallow valley about two inches wide that tape and compound fill flush. Hanging horizontally puts those tapered edges on the long seams, which is nearly all of your seams. Every butt joint you avoid is one less place where the tape sits proud of the wall and has to be disguised under a 16 inch wide, paper-thin hump that only a good finisher can make invisible.
That is the whole argument for the 12 foot sheet, and it is not about the four fewer pieces. It is that a 12 foot sheet spans a 12 foot wall with no butt joint at all. Weigh it against the fact that a 4 × 12 sheet of ½ inch board is about 80 pounds and awkward in a stairwell, and that some suppliers stock 12 foot board only to order.
Thickness is not an estimating question, it is a code question
Board thickness is deliberately not an input here, because it does not change how many sheets cover a wall. It changes two other things: what you are permitted to install, and what a sheet weighs when you are holding it against a ceiling.
On ceilings framed at 24 inches on centre, ordinary ½ inch board sags between the joists — under its own weight, under blown insulation, and dramatically under water-based texture. The code table for gypsum board application allows ⅝ inch there, or ½ inch sag-resistant board sold for exactly this case. At 16 inches on centre, ½ inch is fine.
In an attached garage, the assembly between the garage and the dwelling is a fire separation. The model code calls for not less than ½ inch gypsum board applied to the garage side of the shared wall, and ⅝ inch Type X on the ceiling where habitable rooms sit above the garage. Type X is not simply thicker board — it contains glass fibre that holds the core together as the gypsum calcines, which is what buys the rated time.
These describe the model International Residential Code and the Gypsum Association’s application standard. Jurisdictions amend both, and your building department has the final word. Confirm locally before you buy — particularly for anything fire-rated.
What this calculator assumes
- The room is a rectangle with four walls of the same height. Closets, alcoves, and stairwells are separate runs — calculate them and add the sheets, not the areas, once each has been rounded up.
- Sheet counts are rounded up and carry no additional waste allowance, because offcuts are usually reusable. A cut-up room needs a spare sheet or two on top.
- Openings are deducted at nominal areas — 21 sq ft per door and 15 per window — not measured ones. Board is hung across an opening and cut out afterwards, so the sheet count barely moves; the deduction matters far more for compound and tape.
- One gallon of compound per 100 sq ft assumes a standard three-coat finish and all-purpose compound. A level 5 skim coat over the whole surface uses considerably more.
- Screw counts assume the usual field and perimeter pattern over framing at 16 inches on centre. Ceilings take more; 24 inch framing takes fewer per sheet.
- Board thickness, corner bead, primer, texture, adhesive, and which way the sheets run are not modelled. None of them change the area; several of them change the job.
- Nothing here is a substitute for your building department on fire-rated assemblies, ceiling framing spacing, or moisture- and mould-resistant board in wet areas.

How many sheets of drywall do I need for a 12 × 14 room?
With an 8 foot ceiling, one door, and two windows: twelve 4 × 12 sheets, fourteen 4 × 10 sheets, or seventeen 4 × 8 sheets. The arithmetic is a 52 foot perimeter times 8 feet of height, which is 416 square feet of wall, plus 168 square feet of ceiling, less 51 square feet of openings — 533 square feet to board. Divide by the coverage of the sheet you are buying and round up. The sheet count is the easy part; the compound, tape, and screws that finish those 533 square feet are what people forget to buy.
Should drywall be hung horizontally or vertically?
Horizontally, on a standard 8 foot wall, and it is not a close call. Two 4 foot courses cover 8 feet exactly, which puts one long seam at waist height where it is comfortable to coat and easy to sight down for flatness — instead of a seam every 4 feet running floor to ceiling. It also produces substantially less joint to finish: in a 12 × 14 room, horizontal 4 × 12 sheets give roughly 68 linear feet of joint against roughly 96 for vertical 4 × 8 sheets, corners aside. Horizontal hanging also ties the studs together across their length, which stiffens the wall. Vertical hanging has its place — commercial work with fire-rated assemblies, and walls taller than 8 feet — but in a house it is usually a sign that someone was working alone and could not lift a sheet overhead.
What is a butt joint, and why is it the hard one?
The long edges of a drywall sheet are tapered — the paper dips into a shallow recess about 2 inches wide on each side, so when two sheets meet edge to edge there is a valley to fill with tape and compound that finishes flush with the wall. The short ends have no taper. When two sheets meet end to end you get a butt joint, and any tape you bed there sits proud of the surface. The only way to hide it is to feather compound 10 to 16 inches out on each side, building a very slight, very wide hump that the eye cannot catch. It takes more mud, more coats, and more skill than any other joint on the job, which is why fewer butt joints is worth paying for.
How much joint compound do I need per sheet of drywall?
Roughly a third of a gallon per 4 × 8 sheet, which comes from the more useful rule: about one gallon of all-purpose compound per 100 square feet of board for a standard three-coat finish — bed the tape, fill, then skim. Compound is sold in 4.5 gallon buckets and in 1 gallon boxes, so a small room usually means one bucket. The figure moves with technique: a finisher who lays it on thin and sands little uses less than one who buries everything and sands it back. Treat it as ±30%, and buy the bucket rather than run out with two walls coated.
How many screws per sheet of drywall?
About 32 for a 4 × 8 sheet on framing 16 inches on centre — roughly one screw per square foot of board, or about 40 for a 4 × 10 and 48 for a 4 × 12. By weight that is around one pound of coarse-thread screws per 300 square feet of board. Ceilings take more than walls because gravity is working against you all day, and framing at 24 inches on centre takes fewer per sheet but asks more of each one. Buy a pound over: screws are the cheapest thing on the list and the most annoying to run out of.
Do you subtract doors and windows when estimating drywall?
For sheets, barely — board is normally hung straight across an opening and cut out afterwards, precisely so the joints do not land at the corners of the opening where cracks start. This calculator deducts a nominal 21 square feet per door and 15 per window, which keeps the sheet count honest without pretending the offcuts are all reusable. For compound, tape, and screws the deduction matters much more, because those genuinely scale with the surface being finished. If a room is mostly glass, deduct the openings; if it has one interior door, it will barely move the answer.
When do I need 5/8 inch drywall instead of 1/2 inch?
Two situations come up in houses.
