  • Solid hardwood has to acclimate before a board is laid. Leave the boxes open in the room they will be installed in, at the temperature and humidity the room actually lives at, for several days — manufacturers commonly ask for three to seven, and some ask for more. Wood laid before it has equalised will cup or gap once it does, and by then the floor is down. Laminate and vinyl need far less, but 48 hours is still the usual instruction.
  • Keep the leftover, sealed and flat. Dye lots and print runs differ, so a board bought in two years will not match, and a discontinued line cannot be matched at all.
  • Underlayment is sized from the net area, not the area with waste: it is trimmed to the room rather than cut into staggered planks. Check whether your flooring has it pre-attached before buying any.
  • Transition strips are counted at a standard 36 inch opening. Nothing here covers baseboard, quarter round, subfloor levelling, or a moisture barrier over concrete.
Before you order

Wood has to acclimate, and no quantity fixes skipping it

This is the expensive one, so it goes first. Solid hardwood must sit in the room it will be installed in, at the temperature and humidity that room actually lives at, for several days before a single board is laid. Manufacturers commonly ask for three to seven days; some ask for longer, and the honest test is a moisture meter reading within a few percent of the subfloor rather than a number of days on a calendar.

Wood moves with moisture. A board delivered from a cold warehouse into a heated house will lose moisture and shrink; one delivered into a humid summer room will gain and swell. If that happens after the floor is nailed or glued down, the movement has nowhere to go: boards cup across their width, gaps open between them in the dry season, or the field grows until it runs out of expansion gap and buckles clear of the subfloor. None of that is repairable without lifting the floor.

Engineered wood is far more stable but still wants 48 to 72 hours. Laminate and vinyl plank usually specify 48. It costs a week of waiting, and it is the difference between a floor that lasts and a floor you do twice.

Formula & methodology

Area first, boxes last

Flooring is sold by coverage, not by piece, so nothing here divides by a plank dimension. A plank’s length only decides how long the offcut is; it has no bearing on how much floor a carton covers. The whole calculation is an area, an allowance, and one division — with every room added together before anything is rounded.

Underlayment is sized from the net area rather than the ordered area, because it is trimmed to the room instead of being cut into staggered pieces. Transition strips come from the doorway count at a standard 36 inch opening.

Worked example

A 12 × 15 room in 20 sq ft cartons

The room is 180 square feet. A ten percent allowance for a straight lay adds 18, so the order is sized against 198 square feet. At 20 square feet a carton that is 9.9 boxes, which means 10 boxes — 200 square feet in the house, and 2 square feet left over once the plan is spent. Underlayment is the net 180 square feet, not the 198, and one doorway needs 3 linear feet of transition strip.

Now add a 10 × 4 hall and an 11 × 12 bedroom. Together the three rooms are 352 square feet, plus ten percent is 387.2, which is 20 boxes. Priced room by room instead — ten for the living room, three for the hall, eight for the bedroom — it would have been 21. That extra carton exists only because each room rounded up on its own, when in reality the piece left over at the end of the living room is exactly what starts the first row of the hall.

Switch the same 180 square foot room to herringbone and the suggested allowance goes from ten percent to twenty: 216 square feet, 11 boxes. One extra carton is what the pattern costs in material before anyone has been paid to lay it, and mitred offcuts are why.

Where the waste goes

It is offcuts, not breakage — which is why the pattern matters

End joints in adjacent rows have to be staggered. Six inches is the usual minimum and some manufacturers ask for eight or twelve, partly because a floor with aligned seams looks like a brick wall built by someone in a hurry, and partly because the aligned joint is a genuine line of weakness — a click floor will flex and eventually fail along it.

Staggering is achieved by starting each row with the offcut from the end of the previous one. That works until the offcut is shorter than the minimum starting length, at which point it is waste. On a straight lay in a rectangular room, most offcuts are long enough to reuse, which is why five to ten percent covers it. On a diagonal, every cut at the wall is oblique and the remnant is a long wedge that fits nowhere. On herringbone, every single piece is cut on an angle at both ends.

What drives the number is edge length per square foot, not floor area. A small room with a bay window, two closets and a chimney breast will eat more percentage-wise than a large plain rectangle — so treat the suggestion in the result panel as a starting point and push it up if your outline is complicated.

What this calculator assumes

  • Every room is a rectangle. An L-shaped room splits into two rectangles — add them as two rows and the totals work out the same.
  • Rooms are summed before anything is rounded up, so the offcut from one room is assumed usable in the next. If the rooms will be laid months apart or in different products, order them separately instead.
  • Nothing is deducted for a kitchen island, a hearth, or a built-in — subtract those from the room dimensions yourself if the floor genuinely will not run under them.
  • Underlayment is the net floor area. Check whether your flooring has it pre-attached before buying any: doubling up is a common and warranty-voiding mistake, and over concrete you need a moisture barrier as well.
  • Transition strips are counted at a standard 36 inch opening. Wider cased openings, and floating floors that need a break in a long run, both need more than the door count suggests.
  • The pattern only changes the suggested allowance, never the area. A diagonal floor covers the same square footage; it simply destroys more material getting there.
  • Nothing here covers acclimation time, subfloor levelling, moisture testing, baseboard, quarter round, or the expansion gap at the perimeter — that gap is not optional on a floating floor, and it is left in the fitting rather than in the order.

How long does flooring need to acclimate before installation?

Manufacturers commonly specify three to seven days and some ask for longer; the real test is a moisture meter reading within a few percent of the subfloor, not a number of days. Engineered wood is more stable but still wants 48 to 72 hours. Laminate and vinyl plank usually ask for 48 hours. This is not a formality. Wood laid before it has equalised will shrink or swell afterwards, and afterwards it is nailed or glued down: the result is cupping, gapping between boards in winter, or a floor that buckles against its own expansion gap in summer. It is the most expensive avoidable mistake on this subject, and it costs nothing but a week to avoid.

Which direction should the planks run?

Lengthwise along the longest wall is the usual answer, because it makes the room read longer and means fewer end joints. The other common rule is to run planks toward the main light source — a window or a patio door — so that light rakes down the length of a board rather than across the seams, which hides them instead of picking each one out in relief. When the two rules disagree, most installers follow the light. There is also a structural constraint on a wood subfloor: solid hardwood nailed down should run perpendicular to the floor joists, not parallel to them, and that outranks both aesthetic rules.

How much waste should I allow for flooring?

Five to ten percent for a straight lay in a rectangular room, fifteen for a diagonal, and fifteen to twenty for herringbone or a room full of angles, bays and closets. The waste is not breakage — it is offcuts. End joints in adjacent rows have to be staggered, usually by at least six inches, or the floor shows a visible ladder of aligned seams and has a genuine line of weakness across it. Staggering means each row starts with the piece left over from the last one, and the pieces too short to start a row are what the allowance pays for. The more oblique the cut, the longer the unusable remnant, which is why herringbone costs so much more than a straight lay in material alone.

Do I need underlayment, and how much?

It depends on the product and the subfloor. Floating floors — most laminate and click vinyl — need a cushioning, sound-deadening layer, and many now come with it pre-attached, in which case adding more is a mistake that voids the warranty and can make the click joints fail. Over a concrete slab you also need a moisture barrier, either built into the underlayment or laid separately. Size it from the net floor area, not the area you order planks against: underlayment is trimmed to the room rather than cut into staggered pieces, so the plank allowance has nothing to do with it. Rolls overlap a couple of inches at the seams, which is inches over a run of many feet.

How do I calculate flooring for several rooms at once?

Add the areas first, then round up to boxes once. This calculator does exactly that, which is the point of the room list. Working room by room and adding the box counts buys a carton of nothing every two or three rooms, because each room's part-used last box gets rounded up separately — and in reality the offcut from the living room is what starts the hall. The one case for ordering separately is when the rooms will be laid months apart or in different products, since the dye lots will differ anyway.

What is a transition strip and how many do I need?

A strip that covers the join wherever this floor meets a different one — a doorway into carpet or tile, a threshold at an exterior door, the edge at a hearth. Floating floors need them for a second reason: the floor has to be free to move as a single field, so it cannot be continuous through a narrow doorway without risking buckling. Count one per opening. This calculator sizes them at a standard 36 inch opening; measure a wider cased opening and add another doorway for each extra three feet.

Is this the same as the tile calculator?

No. Tile repeats on a rigid grid, so the grout joint changes the count and the answer is a number of pieces; the tile calculator has joint width as an input for exactly that reason. Flooring is cut to whatever length each row needs, is sold by coverage per carton rather than by piece, and puts its waste into staggering offcuts. Using one for the other will give you a wrong order in a way that is not obvious from the number.
