Footprint, pitch, and waste
The long side of the building as seen from above — measured to the drip edge, so include the eave overhang, not just the wall.
The short side, also to the drip edge. An L-shaped house is two rectangles: run each one and add the squares.
Rise in inches for every 12 inches of run — the 6 in “six twelve”. Hold a level out 12 inches from the roof and measure down to it.
This changes the capping, not the area: over the same footprint at the same pitch, a hip roof and a gable roof have identical surface.
Ten percent covers rake cuts and the starter course on a simple roof. Fifteen is closer for valleys, dormers, and hips. Kept as its own line below so you can argue with it.
A 1,200.00 sq ft footprint at 6/12 is 1,341.64 sq ft of roof — the pitch multiplies it by 1.1180. With a 10% allowance that is 1,475.80 sq ft, or 45 bundles of architectural shingles.

- One roll of #15 felt covers four squares after laps. Synthetic underlayment usually covers ten squares to the roll, so divide the roll count by about two and a half if that is what you buy.
The pitch multiplier, and why it is the whole calculation
A roof is not the size of the house it sits on. Walk a tape around the outside and you measure the footprint — the shadow the roof casts at noon. The roof itself is the sloped surface above that shadow, and a slope is always longer than the ground it covers.
Roof pitch is quoted as a rise over a run of exactly 12 inches: a 6/12 roof climbs 6 inches for every foot it travels horizontally. That makes a right triangle with legs of 6 and 12, and the rafter is its hypotenuse. Divide the hypotenuse by the run and you have the factor by which every square foot of footprint becomes roof.

Waste is applied to that area as a percentage and reported on its own line. Bundles and underlayment rolls are then division, rounded up: nobody sells four fifths of a bundle, and being one bundle short on the last course means a second trip and a shingle lot that may not match.
One consequence worth stating plainly, because it surprises people who have priced both: a hip roof and a gable roof over the same rectangle at the same pitch have identical field area. The planes project down onto the footprint without gaps or overlaps however they are arranged, so the total is always footprint × M. What changes is the capping — and, in practice, the cut waste, which is why a hip deserves a larger waste allowance rather than a larger area.
A 40 × 30 ranch at 6/12
The footprint is 40 × 30 = 1,200 square feet. That is the number a tape around the house gives you, and it is not the roof.
At 6/12 the multiplier is √(36 + 144) ÷ 12 = √180 ÷ 12 = 1.118. So the roof is 1,200 × 1.118 = 1,341.64 square feet — 142 square feet more than the footprint, or about one and a half squares that an estimate from the footprint alone would simply not have bought.
Add a 10% waste allowance — 134.16 sq ft — and the order is 1,475.80 square feet, which is 14.76 squares. At three bundles to the square that is 45 bundles of architectural shingles. Underlayment at 400 sq ft of coverage per roll of #15 felt is 4 rolls. The gable ridge runs the full 40 feet, so 40 linear feet of cap.
Now change one thing. Make it a hip roof and the field area does not move at all — still 45 bundles — but the capping goes from 40 feet to 100: a 10 foot ridge plus four hip lines of 22.5 feet each. Make it 12/12 instead and the multiplier becomes 1.414, the roof becomes 1,697 square feet, and the order becomes 57 bundles. Same house, same footprint, twelve more bundles.
Pitch decides what may go on the roof, not just how much
Slope is not only an arithmetic input. It is the property that determines whether asphalt shingles are a legal covering at all, because a shingle roof is not waterproof — it is water-shedding. Every course laps the one below, and the assembly works because gravity moves water down and off before it can travel sideways far enough to reach a lap from underneath.
Below 2/12, that stops being true. Water lingers, wind drives it uphill, and it finds the lap. The International Residential Code sets 2:12 as the hard floor for asphalt shingles; under it you need a low-slope system — modified bitumen, TPO, EPDM, or standing seam metal — and no amount of shingle quality substitutes.
Between 2/12 and 4/12, shingles are permitted but the underlayment is doubled: two layers, lapped, beneath the field. The same physics at a lesser degree, met with a second line of defence rather than a different roof. This calculator counts that second layer into the roll figure, because it is a real line on a real invoice and leaving it as a footnote is how it gets missed.
Above roughly 6/12, the constraint changes from water to gravity applied to people. A crew can walk a 6/12 roof; past that they need roof jacks, staging, and fall arrest, work slows, and installed price per square rises — often by half again or more by the time a roof reaches 12/12. The material total on this page does not change with that. The labour quote very much does.

Why roofers count in squares
A roofing square is 100 square feet. It is not an SI unit, not a customary unit, and not used anywhere outside this trade — it is a convention that survives because it is the right size for the job. A square is roughly what one person installs in an hour of steady work, it is three bundles, and it makes a whole roof a two-digit number that fits in a head: a 22-square roof, not a 2,200-square-foot roof.
Everything a supplier quotes runs on it. Shingles are priced per square, labour is bid per square, and a tear-off is charged per square. When you ring a supplier, the number they want is squares, and the number this page puts in the headline is squares — including waste, because that is what you are buying.
What this calculator assumes
- The footprint is a rectangle measured to the drip edge, so the eave overhang is included. A typical 12 to 24 inch overhang on all four sides is real roof area and leaving it out is a second way to under-order.
- Every plane shares one pitch. A roof with a shallower porch or a steeper dormer is two calculations added together, not one average.
- Complex roofs are handled by splitting them into rectangles and adding the squares. Add the areas before converting to bundles — three separate runs each round up to their own whole bundle.
- Three bundles to the square is standard architectural and three-tab packaging. Heavyweight designer profiles can be four or five, which is manufacturer-specific, not a standard.
- Underlayment coverage of 400 sq ft per roll is net of laps for ASTM D226 Type I (#15) felt. Synthetic underlayment usually covers about ten squares to the roll.
- Nothing here covers valleys, dormers, chimneys, skylights, flashing, drip edge, starter strip, ice-and-water shield at the eaves, ridge vent, or tear-off and disposal of the existing roof. Those are line items on a quote and none of them scale with area alone.
- The 2/12 and 4/12 thresholds and the 6/12 staging line are the model code and common trade practice respectively. Neither is a substitute for your local building department or your installer.

Why is my roof bigger than my house?
Because a sloped surface is longer than its shadow. A rafter that climbs 6 inches for every 12 inches it travels horizontally is the hypotenuse of a right triangle, and that hypotenuse is √(6² + 12²) ÷ 12 = 1.118 times the horizontal run. Every square foot of ground under the roof is covered by 1.118 square feet of roof. At a 12/12 pitch the factor is 1.414 — the roof is 41% larger than the footprint. This is the single most common way a roofing estimate comes up short, and it comes up short by an amount you cannot fix once the truck has gone.
How do I measure roof pitch without getting on the roof?
From inside the attic, hold a level horizontally against the underside of a rafter, mark 12 inches along the level from where it touches, and measure straight up from that mark to the rafter. That vertical distance in inches is the rise, and the pitch is that rise in 12. From the ground you can do the same against a gable end, or use a smartphone inclinometer against the rake board and convert: pitch rise = tan(angle) × 12. A 26.6° roof is 6/12; a 45° roof is 12/12.
How many bundles of shingles are in a square?
Three, for standard architectural (laminated) and three-tab shingles alike. A square is 100 square feet of finished roof, and manufacturers package three bundles to cover it so that one bundle is a weight one person can carry up a ladder. Heavyweight designer profiles are the exception — some run four or five bundles to the square — so read the wrapper before ordering. Ridge cap shingles are counted separately, by the linear foot, and are not part of the field bundle count.
What is the minimum roof pitch for asphalt shingles?
Two in twelve. Below 2/12, asphalt shingles are not a permitted roof covering under the International Residential Code at any price or quality — water moves too slowly across a nearly-flat surface to shed before it works sideways under a lap, and the roof leaks by design rather than by defect. Between 2/12 and 4/12 shingles are allowed but the underlayment is doubled, for the same reason at a lesser degree. Local amendments vary, so confirm with your building department before you buy.
Do hip roofs need more shingles than gable roofs?
No — not for the field, which surprises almost everyone. Over the same rectangular footprint at the same pitch, a hip roof and a gable roof have exactly the same surface area, because the sloped planes project down onto the footprint without gaps or overlaps regardless of how they are arranged. What a hip roof does need is far more capping: a gable has one ridge, while a hip has a shortened ridge plus four hip lines, all of which need cap shingles. A 40 × 30 hip at 6/12 has 100 linear feet of cap against a gable's 40. Hips also generate more cut waste, which is why 15% is a better allowance there than 10%.
How many squares of shingles does a 2,000 square foot house need?
That depends entirely on the pitch, which is the point of this page. If 2,000 square feet is the roof footprint — not the finished floor area, which counts a second storey the roof never sees — then at 4/12 it is 21.1 squares, at 6/12 it is 22.4, at 8/12 it is 24.0, and at 12/12 it is 28.3. Add waste on top of any of those. Quoting a shingle order from floor area alone is how a two-storey house ends up with twice the roof it needs.
How much waste should I allow for roofing?
Ten percent is the usual figure for a simple gable with two clean planes, where the waste is rake cuts and the starter course. Fifteen percent is closer for a hip roof or anything with valleys and dormers, because every valley means cutting shingles at an angle and discarding the offcut. Complex roofs with many planes can run higher still. The allowance is shown here as its own line rather than folded into the total, so you can set it deliberately instead of inheriting someone else's guess.
