  • One dog year is not seven human years. Nothing in the veterinary literature supports a flat multiplier, and both methods here disagree with it in opposite directions at opposite ends of life.
  • The two estimates are not reconcilable and are not meant to be. The table describes life stage; the curve describes what DNA methylation looks like at that age.
  • Size class is a proxy for breed, and lifespan varies widely inside every band. This is a conversation starter with your veterinarian, not a prognosis.
Formula & methodology

The two conversions, and where each one comes from

The size-class table is the chart on the wall of a veterinary practice. Every dog spends about 15 human years growing up in its first year and about 9 more in its second, because puberty arrives at roughly the same point on the calendar whatever the breed. After that the curves separate by adult weight.

The second formula is not a chart. Wang and colleagues, publishing in Cell Systems in 2020, compared DNA methylation at sites conserved between the two species in 104 Labrador retrievers and in human samples, then fitted the mapping between them. The result was a logarithm, which is why it front-loads so hard: a one-year-old dog lands at 31 human years, and the gap between year 10 and year 11 is under two.

Both are interpolated inside a year rather than stepped, so a dog of 18 months reads as 19.5 by the table rather than jumping from 15 to 24 on its birthday.

Worked example

A five-year-old medium dog, both ways

Take a 40 lb dog aged exactly five — the calculator’s starting state. The table gives 15 for the first year and 9 for the second, which is 24 at age two. Three more years at 5 human years each adds 15, for 39. The epigenetic curve is worked independently: ln(5) is 1.609, times 16 is 25.75, plus 31 gives 56.8. The same dog, the same day, and a gap of nearly eighteen years between the two answers.

Now change nothing but the size. A 12 lb terrier at five reads 36; a 130 lb mastiff reads 45. That nine-year spread from body size alone is bigger than the error anyone worries about in the seven-times rule — and the divergence keeps widening, because the mastiff adds 7 human years every calendar year while the terrier adds 4. By ten they are 56 and 80.

The consequence that actually matters is the life stage rather than the number. That mastiff is treated as a senior at six; the terrier not until ten. Same age, same house, different bloodwork schedule.

Why size matters

Large dogs age faster, which is biologically backwards

Across mammal species, bigger means longer-lived: an elephant outlasts a mouse by fifty years, and body mass predicts lifespan well enough to be a textbook relationship. Inside a single species — Canis familiaris, spanning a 4 lb Chihuahua to a 200 lb mastiff, the widest size range of any land mammal — the relationship flips. Every additional 4.4 lb of adult body mass has been estimated to cost roughly a month of life.

The mechanism is unsettled. Large breeds grow extraordinarily fast as puppies, and that growth is driven by insulin-like growth factor 1, which is associated with shorter lifespan across many species. More cells and more divisions also mean more opportunities for the mutations that cause cancer, and large breeds do die of cancer disproportionately. What is not in dispute is the pattern itself, which is why every veterinary chart splits by weight and why this calculator asks for adult size before it asks anything else.

Cats show nothing of the kind. Domestic cats cluster between roughly 8 and 12 lb, and a Maine Coon is not on a different ageing curve from a Siamese — one table covers the species, which is why the cat version of this calculator has no size input at all. If you have both animals in the house, that is the single biggest difference between how their ages are worked out.

What this calculator assumes

  • Adult weight, not current weight. A four-month-old Great Dane puppy belongs in the giant band, because the band describes what it will become.
  • The giant-breed rate is the low end of what is published. Charts in circulation put giant breeds anywhere from 7 to 9 human years per calendar year; this uses 7, so a giant-breed figure here should be read as a floor.
  • The epigenetic curve was fitted to 104 Labrador retrievers. It does not know about size class at all, which is a real limitation rather than a feature — it returns the same number for a Chihuahua and a Dane.
  • Life stage boundaries follow the AAHA approach of treating “senior” as the last quarter or so of expected lifespan, so they move with size class rather than sitting at a fixed age.
  • Nothing here is veterinary advice or a prognosis. Individual dogs vary enormously inside every band, and the only person who can tell you how your dog is ageing is someone who has examined it.

Dog age FAQ

Is one dog year really seven human years?

No, and there is no study behind it. The seven-times rule has no citation in the veterinary literature; the most credible account of where it came from is mid-century marketing, reverse-engineered from a roughly 70-year human lifespan divided by a roughly 10-year canine one. It is wrong at both ends. A one-year-old dog can reproduce and has a full adult skeleton, which no seven-year-old child does, and a 12-year-old Chihuahua is not 84 in any meaningful sense — she may have years left.

Why do big dogs age faster than small ones?

Nobody is certain, and it is genuinely strange: across mammal species the rule runs the other way, with elephants outliving mice by decades. Within dogs it inverts. The leading explanations are that large breeds grow very fast as puppies, that high circulating IGF-1 drives that growth and carries a cost, and that more cell divisions in a bigger body mean more chances for cancer — large breeds do die of cancer more often. Kraus and colleagues, writing in The American Naturalist in 2013, found the effect shows up as a steeper rise in mortality risk with age rather than as a later start to ageing.

The two estimates disagree by a lot. Which one should I use?

Use the size-class table for anything practical — diet, exercise, when to start senior screening — because it is what a veterinary practice works from and because it tracks life stage. Use the epigenetic curve when you want to know what the biology says: it is the only one of the two derived from a measurement rather than a chart, and it maps a five-year-old dog to a human in their late fifties. They disagree because they answer different questions, and averaging them would produce a number that answers neither.

When does my dog count as a senior?

Roughly the last quarter of expected lifespan, which is why the boundary moves with size rather than sitting at a fixed birthday. A giant breed is treated as senior from about six, a large dog from seven, a medium dog from about nine and a small dog from ten. It is not a label — it is when twice-yearly exams and baseline bloodwork start being worth the money, because catching kidney or thyroid disease early is what changes the outcome.

Does breed matter more than size?

Size explains most of it, which is lucky, because breed is a poor input. Most dogs are mixes, a shelter's guess at breed is often wrong, and within-breed lifespan varies more than between similarly sized breeds. There are real exceptions — some giant breeds are shorter-lived than their weight alone predicts, and a few small breeds are unusually long-lived — but not by enough to justify a breed dropdown pretending to a precision it does not have.

My puppy is six months old. Why is there no epigenetic age?

Because the formula is a logarithm and it collapses. At six months it returns about 20, at two months it is near zero, and below about seven weeks it goes negative — a natural logarithm has no floor. The fit describes adult dogs well and puppies badly, so this calculator returns nothing below a year rather than printing a number that looks authoritative and is not. The size-class table still answers: about 7.5 human years at six months.
