The formula

EMA₁ is an EMA of price, EMA₂ is an EMA of EMA₁, and EMA₃ is an EMA of EMA₂ (all the same length). The 3 × EMA₁ − 3 × EMA₂ + EMA₃ combination cancels most of the lag an EMA introduces, so TEMA clings to price — yet the repeated smoothing keeps it from tracing every tick. Despite the name it is not simply an EMA run three times.

What it is

The Triple Exponential Moving Average, or TEMA, is a low-lag trend line designed by Patrick Mulloy to track price more closely than an ordinary moving average while still filtering out minor noise. Despite the name, it is not simply an EMA smoothed three times — that would be slower, not faster. Instead it is a clever combination of one, two, and three layers of EMA arranged to cancel out most of the delay. To a beginner it answers: where is the trend right now, with as little lag as possible? TEMA turns earlier than both the standard EMA and the DEMA of the same length, so it clings tightly to price and responds quickly to changes in direction. That responsiveness is its selling point and, in choppy conditions, its liability.

How it's calculated

TEMA extends Mulloy's Double Exponential Moving Average idea by one more layer. You first compute an EMA of price, then an EMA of that EMA, then an EMA of that second EMA — call them EMA1, EMA2, and EMA3, all using the same length. TEMA then combines them with the formula three times EMA1, minus three times EMA2, plus EMA3. The trick is in the subtraction: an EMA of an EMA lags more than a single EMA, and by subtracting the extra-lagged layers in the right proportions, most of the delay is cancelled while the smoothing is retained. This is a lag-reduction technique, not additional smoothing, which is why TEMA responds faster than a plain EMA rather than slower. The layered correction is what lets the line hug price without tracing every tiny wiggle. Each component recomputes bar by bar as new prices arrive.

Reading it step by step

Read TEMA like a fast trend average: its slope defines the trend, and its crossovers — price crossing TEMA, or a fast TEMA crossing a slow one — are the signals. Expect it to turn earlier than both the EMA and DEMA of the same length, so it will flag a change in trend sooner, for better and for worse. The tighter it tracks price, the quicker it responds, which means it catches the start of moves that a slower average would miss. A rising TEMA that price stays above marks a healthy uptrend; a downturn in the line warns the trend is shifting. Because it hugs price so closely, small pullbacks can pull it down briefly, so read the overall slope rather than every micro-turn. Its responsiveness is a double-edged sword — early on real moves, but jumpy on noise.

Common lengths mirror those of ordinary EMAs — a short TEMA for fast signals, a longer one for a smoother trend track. Shortening the length makes TEMA extraordinarily responsive but very noisy; lengthening it tames the jumpiness at the cost of some of its speed advantage. The trade-off is the usual one but amplified, because TEMA's lag reduction magnifies both the timeliness and the noise. Because it reacts so fast, many traders confirm its signals with a slower average to avoid acting on every twitch.

A trend-filter strategy uses TEMA not as a trigger but as a gate — take signals from other tools only when they align with TEMA's slope — so its responsiveness improves your timing without dictating every trade. Exits often use the TEMA turn or a price-based stop, and because TEMA whipsaws in chop, adding a confirmation such as a slower average or a momentum check materially cuts down on bad entries. A worked example

Imagine a 20-period TEMA and a 20-period EMA on the same uptrending chart. As price accelerates up from 30 to 34, the EMA, weighed down by its lag, trails at 32.6, while the TEMA — thanks to its three-times-EMA1 minus three-times-EMA2 plus EMA3 construction — sits much closer to price at 33.5, having turned up a full two bars before the EMA did. You use a fast-slow TEMA crossover system, and the 10-period TEMA crosses above the 30-period TEMA at 32.8, triggering a long two bars ahead of where the equivalent EMA cross would fire, so you enter near 33.0 rather than 33.6. Price runs to 36, then stalls and chops between 35 and 36; the responsive TEMA dips and rises repeatedly, threatening several false exit signals. Recognising the chop, you defer to your ADX, which has fallen to 18, confirming the trend has weakened, and you exit on the first TEMA downturn at 35.4 rather than trusting the next whippy re-cross — pocketing the early-entry advantage while sidestepping the noise.
